Fresh Snowfall in Kashmir Prompts Avalanche Warnings; Stranded Swiss Skiers in Gulmarg Rescued

Jammu & Kasmir: The picturesque ski resorts of Gulmarg and Gurez, along with the higher reaches of Kupwara in north Kashmir, were blanketed in fresh snowfall today. Sonamarg, a popular tourist resort in the Ganderbal district, also witnessed a fresh layer of snow, painting the landscape in a serene white.

In Kupwara district, Z-Gali, Furkiya, and Sadna Top received substantial snowfall, measuring 25 inches, 19 inches, and 18 inches respectively. Gulmarg, known for its breathtaking vistas, received 8 inches of snowfall. Responding swiftly, authorities deployed personnel and machinery to clear vital roadways affected by the snow, ensuring safe passage for residents and visitors.

The district administration in Bandipora took precautionary measures, ordering the closure of the road leading to Gurez due to recent heavy snowfall. An official order stated, “Bandipora-Gurez road shall remain closed for all types of vehicular movement until further notice.”

In the wake of the snowfall, authorities issued a “low danger” avalanche warning for the higher reaches of six districts in the Kashmir valley over the next 24 hours. Avalanche warnings with medium danger levels were issued for areas above 2,400 meters in Poonch, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara districts. Additionally, low danger level warnings were issued for altitudes above 2,800 meters in Doda and 3,500 meters in Ganderbal.

Residents in these areas were advised to exercise caution, avoid venturing into avalanche-prone zones, and take necessary precautions for their safety.

Meanwhile, the Army conducted a successful rescue operation in Baramulla district, rescuing seven individuals, including two foreign nationals from Switzerland, who were stranded due to bad weather after descending from Sunshine peak. The rescue party, under Major Abhay, established contact with the stranded skiers at a dhok near Alu post. After staying overnight due to inaccessible routes and poor visibility, the individuals were brought to safety the following day and provided with first aid and meals.

As Kashmir embraces the winter wonderland, residents and tourists are urged to stay updated on weather advisories and exercise caution in the snowy terrain. Authorities remain vigilant to ensure the safety of all those navigating the region during this snowy season.
