Darjeeling Welcomes Winter with First Snowfall of the Season

Darjeeling, known for its scenic beauty, stunning view of Mount Kanchenjunga and captivating landscapes, experienced an unanticipated event as snowfall graced the town and surrounding areas, transforming the region into a mesmerizing Winter Wonderland.

Sandakphu, a picturesque area in Darjeeling, was among the locations blanketed by the first snowfall of the season. On Thursday evening, unexpected snowfall draped Sandakphu and several other areas in a breathtaking layer of white, captivating both locals and tourists alike.

Roads winding through the region were veiled in a snowy cloak, resembling delicate cotton flakes strewn across the paths. From the Pine Forest to the local hotels, everything stood adorned in a pristine covering of snow, evoking a sense of awe and delight among travelers.

This sudden and rare snowfall during the initial days of December caught many by surprise. It brought immense joy and excitement to the travelers exploring the hilly terrains of North Bengal. Delighted faces amidst the dropping temperatures resonated the joy of witnessing nature’s spectacle.

Even in the adjacent areas of the Darjeeling town, snowflakes descended unexpectedly, adding to the excitement of the season. Travelers savored this uncommon experience, sharing their joy through social media posts capturing the ethereal beauty of the snow-clad landscapes.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Darjeeling hovered between 5 to 13 degrees Celsius, significantly lower in areas like Sandakphu and Tiger Hill. As the day progressed, the drop in temperature prompted further snowfall in Sandakphu, accentuating the winter charm.

However, the plummeting temperatures didn’t deter the spirits of the visitors. Despite the chill, the allure of snowfall in the picturesque hills attracted numerous travelers who marveled at the extraordinary natural display.

This unexpected snowfall has created a unique ambiance, adding a touch of enchantment to the hillsides at the onset of December. While tourists were taken by surprise and relished the rare occurrence, the beauty of the Kanchenjunga mountain range further captivated their hearts, leaving them spellbound.

However, amidst the joyful reverie of the unexpected snowfall in the hills of West Bengal, disruptions in train services to North Bengal due to heavy rain in the plain areas, became a concern. Reacting promptly, the Mamata Banerjee-led government decided to augment transport by introducing additional bus services. NBSTC announced the operation of four extra buses connecting Kolkata to Siliguri and vice versa, catering to the influx of tourists amidst the canceled train services.

The regions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and other areas also witnessed moderate rainfall, hinting at further cold waves anticipated in the coming days.

The unanticipated snowfall in Darjeeling has not only delighted travelers but also prompted the administration to take measures ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for the influx of visitors during this wintry spell.
