Seaplane Services in Lakshadweep Set to Begin 2024-End, Reducing Air Travel Costs

Soar above the Coral Atolls of Lakshadweep on an enchanting seaplane journey that promises not just transportation but an immersive experience, unveiling the hidden treasures of this tropical haven. In a groundbreaking initiative, under the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, SpiceJet, in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), is set to introduce seaplane services that promise to redefine the way we explore the enchanting coral atolls and secluded islands of Lakshadweep, by the end of this year, December, 2024.

The seaplane journey, planned to be operated on the captivating routes both to and within Lakshadweep, is going to offer a front-row seat to experience the stunning views of coral-fringed atolls, turquoise lagoons, and palm-studded islands, from the sky. Buckle up for an aerial adventure that transcends the ordinary and ushers you into the heart of Lakshadweep’s unparalleled natural beauty.

For seaplane operations, the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has decided to develop a water aerodrome at the Cochin Port, and three in Lakshadweep — Minicoy, Agatti and Kavaratti islands — under the regional connectivity scheme UDAN. The MoCA has already given SpiceJet approval to operate seaplanes to the islands of Bangaram, Bitra and Kalpeni from Kochi.

“The MoCA has sanctioned Rs 20 crore each to set up water aerodromes in these locations. The amount will be used for the construction of jetties, floating pontoons, passenger amenities, etc. The facilities are expected to be ready by December 2024,” said a senior Cochin Port official associated with the project. The official said that after conducting trials, seaplane services are likey to become operational by the end of the year.

Current Flight Costs:

Presently, a conventional flight from Kochi to Lakshadweep comes with a price tag in the range of ₹5,000 to ₹6,000 per head. While the archipelago’s allure is undeniable, the cost factor has been a limiting factor for many travelers looking to explore the pristine coral atolls and serene beaches of Lakshadweep.

Seaplane Cost Revolution:

The introduction of smaller amphibian aircraft marks a transformative moment for Lakshadweep tourism. With a seating capacity of 10-12 persons, these seaplanes are expected to significantly reduce operational costs, enabling SpiceJet to offer a ride to Lakshadweep at an astonishingly affordable rate of ₹2,500 per head. This development not only enhances accessibility but also makes the dream of exploring Lakshadweep’s natural wonders a reality for a broader spectrum of travelers.
