The current situation is therefore high-altitude snowfall rather than valley-wide snowfall.
Kashmir Snowfall Update: 17 September 2026
The latest significant snowfall spell brought fresh snow to the higher reaches of Gulmarg, Gurez, Zojila and Sonamarg. Gulmarg’s Apharwat Peak and Gondola Phase 2 area received snow, while fresh snowfall was also reported from Tulail Valley and Kabul Gali in Gurez and from the higher Zojila and Zero Point areas near Sonamarg.
At lower elevations, widespread rain was recorded. Srinagar received 8.2 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending 8:30 am, while Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded 13 mm and 13.2 mm respectively.
The Meteorological Centre indicated generally dry weather from 18 to 25 September, although isolated brief showers could still occur.

Kashmir Snowfall Forecast
Snowfall forecasts in Kashmir are highly dependent on elevation and changing weather systems. A forecast for the valley does not necessarily mean that Srinagar, Gulmarg and high mountain passes will receive the same type or amount of precipitation.
For the current period, the Meteorological Centre has indicated generally dry weather through much of 18–25 September 2026, with isolated brief showers possible.

Gulmarg Snowfall Update
Gulmarg is one of Kashmir’s principal snow destinations. The higher slopes around Apharwat can receive snow earlier than lower parts of the valley.
Fresh snowfall was reported around Apharwat and the Gondola Phase 2 area on 17 September 2026.
Sonamarg & Zojila Snowfall Update
The higher reaches around Sonamarg and Zojila received fresh snow during the September 2026 weather spell. Zojila is particularly sensitive to snowfall because of its elevation and importance as a route toward Ladakh.

Gurez Snowfall Update
Gurez Valley and the higher Tulail area can receive substantial winter snow. Fresh snow was reported around Tulail and Kabul Gali during the September 17 event.

Pahalgam & Srinagar Snowfall
Pahalgam can receive snowfall during winter, particularly across its higher surrounding areas. However, rainfall or relatively mild conditions in the town do not rule out snow at higher elevations.
Srinagar, being at a lower elevation, has more variable snowfall. The January 2026 major snowfall event demonstrated that snow can reach the city during a sufficiently cold and active winter system, while the September 2026 event brought rain rather than widespread snowfall to Srinagar.
