Gurez Valley Set to Reopen in Early Spring, 2024

Situated in the India and Azad Kashmir (Pakistan) border North Kashmir’s Bandipora district, the enchanting Gurez Valley stands poised for a grand revival after months of isolation under winter’s snowy veil, as the Border Roads Organization (BRO) nears completion of the monumental task of clearing the snow from the vital Bandipora-Gurez road, the only medium to get into Gurez and Tulail valleys, in a record time this year. This endeavor, allowing tourists to enjoy the beauty of the early spring season in the valleys, promises to double the influx of tourists compared to the previous year, marking a significant shift in the valley’s accessibility and economic prospects.

The valley, usually isolated due to heavy snowfall on the Razdan Pass for six months, has faced significant barriers hindering its tourism potential. However this year, the diligent efforts of the BRO are set to alter this narrative, with the road closure minimized and efforts underway to open up the passage for travelers.

Closed on late October, 2023, the Bandipora-Gurez Road, is going to be operational again, after the snow clearance, from 28th or 29th of March, 2024.

“We have been working tirelessly since last week. Despite facing avalanches, we remain steadfast in our mission. Weather permitting, the roads shall be open within a week,” expressed a BRO official to Kashmir News Service (KNS), reflecting the organization’s unwavering commitment to this monumental task.

The valley, steeped in history and culture, holds within its bosom the remnants of the ancient Silk Route, a testament to its rich heritage. Its pristine landscapes and tranquil ambiance offer a sanctuary for weary souls seeking refuge from the clamor of urban life.

Local residents, buoyed by the prospect of economic revitalization, eagerly await the influx of tourists. “The opening of the road is akin to a lifeline for us. It not only promises an influx of tourists but also prosperity for our valley,” shared a hopeful shopkeeper with KNS, echoing the sentiments of many.

Despite its potential, the tourism industry in Gurez has remained nascent, waiting for the right moment to flourish. With hotels and local businesses gearing up to accommodate the impending surge of visitors, anticipation hangs thick in the air.

“The Gurez Valley is a hidden gem, waiting to be discovered by the world. With the BRO’s efforts to keep the roads open, we anticipate welcoming more tourists than ever before,” remarked a local youth, brimming with optimism for the valley’s future.

Indeed, the improved accessibility is poised to breathe new life into the valley’s economy, which has long relied on seasonal movements of people and goods. However, amidst this excitement, there remains a collective responsibility to ensure that the influx of tourists does not disturb the delicate ecological balance of the region.

As preparations are underway by the local administration to manage the surge in visitors, there is a concerted effort to uphold sustainable tourism practices. It is imperative that the beauty of Gurez Valley remains untouched for generations to come.
