Day 1: Bagdogra / NJP → Phuentsholing
Approx. 165 km | 4.5–5.5 hrs
Route: Bagdogra Airport / NJP Railway Station → Sevoke → Coronation Bridge → Kalimpong/Jaigaon corridor → Phuentsholing
- Pickup from Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station
- Drive through the scenic Dooars region.
- En-route views of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, tea gardens and forested foothills.
- Cross the Sevoke / Coronation Bridge over the Teesta River, subject to the selected route.
- Continue through the Dooars towards Jaigaon–Phuentsholing.
- Arrive at Phuentsholing, the Bhutan–India border town.
- Complete Bhutan Entry Permit / immigration formalities.
- Evening free to explore Phuentsholing:
- Zangto Pelri Lhakhang
- Phuentsholing Gate
- Local Bhutanese market
- Bhutan Gate area
- Overnight in Phuentsholing.
Experience: First glimpse of Bhutanese architecture and culture immediately after crossing the border.
Day 2: Phuentsholing → Thimphu
Approx. 175 km | 5–6 hrs
Route: Phuentsholing → Gedu → Chukha → Chukha Reservoir → Chuzom → Thimphu
After breakfast, begin the drive towards Bhutan's capital, Thimphu.
En-route sightseeing:
- Gedhu/Gedu – picturesque Himalayan settlement surrounded by forests.
- Chukha – important hydropower region of Bhutan.
- Chukha viewpoint / reservoir area – depending on road and weather conditions.
- Scenic drive through Bhutan's mountain roads and dense forests.
- Chuzom – important road junction where the roads towards Thimphu and Paro meet.
- Continue along the Wang Chhu River valley towards Thimphu.
On arrival in Thimphu:
- Hotel check-in.
- Evening exploration of Thimphu town.
- Walk around Norzin Lam, the main commercial street.
- Explore local handicraft shops and Bhutanese markets.
Overnight: Thimphu.
Day 3: Thimphu Sightseeing
Approx. 25–40 km local sightseeing
Today is dedicated to exploring the Bhutanese capital.
Morning:
- Buddha Dordenma Statue – one of the world's largest Buddha statues.
- Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park
- Panoramic views of Thimphu Valley.
- Motithang Takin Preserve – see Bhutan's national animal, the takin.
- Royal Textile Academy – traditional Bhutanese weaving and textiles.
- National Memorial Chorten – one of Thimphu's most important religious landmarks.
Afternoon:
- Tashichho Dzong – impressive fortress-monastery and administrative centre.
- Folk Heritage Museum
- Simply Bhutan Museum – traditional Bhutanese lifestyle and cultural experiences.
- Centenary Farmers' Market – particularly interesting when operating.
- Traditional handicraft and souvenir shopping.
Possible Bhutanese experiences:
- Traditional Bhutanese dress experience.
- Bhutanese archery demonstration.
- Try traditional Ema Datshi and other Bhutanese cuisine.
- Traditional hot-stone bath, subject to availability.
- Evening walk around Thimphu town.
Overnight: Thimphu.
Day 4: Thimphu → Punakha
Approx. 75 km | 2.5–3 hrs
Route: Thimphu → Dochula Pass → Lamperi → Lobesa → Punakha
After breakfast, drive towards Punakha.
The journey itself is one of the highlights of the trip.
En-route sightseeing:
Dochula Pass – 3,100 m
- Stop at the famous 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens.
- Visit Druk Wangyal Lhakhang.
- Himalayan panoramic views on clear days.
- Explore the surrounding rhododendron and mountain landscape.
Continue downhill through the forested mountain road.
Lamperi / Royal Botanical Park area
- Optional short nature walk.
- Himalayan flora and forest scenery.
Lobesa
- Scenic agricultural valley and traditional Bhutanese villages.
Arrive in Punakha.
Afternoon sightseeing:
- Punakha Dzong – spectacular fortress located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.
- Walk across the traditional Punakha Suspension Bridge.
- Riverside walk and photography.
Optional experience:
- White-water rafting on the Mo Chhu or Pho Chhu, subject to season, river conditions and operator availability.
Overnight: Punakha.
Day 5: Punakha → Paro
Approx. 145 km | 4.5–5.5 hrs
Route: Punakha → Wangdue Phodrang → Dochula → Thimphu → Chuzom → Paro
After breakfast, depart for Paro.
En-route sightseeing:
- Wangdue Phodrang Valley
- Views of Wangdue Phodrang Dzong.
- Traditional Bhutanese villages and terraced agricultural fields.
- Re-cross Dochula Pass, weather permitting.
- Continue towards Thimphu.
- Drive through Chuzom, the important road junction.
- Follow the Paro Chhu valley towards Paro.
Depending on arrival time:
- Paro Rinpung Dzong
- Nyamai Zang Bridge
- Paro town
- Local handicraft and souvenir shops.
Possible evening experience:
- Explore traditional Bhutanese houses and streets.
- Bhutanese dinner.

Day 6: Paro Sightseeing & Tiger's Nest Experience
Approx. 20–30 km driving + 4–6 km hiking
This is the main adventure day of the itinerary.
Taktsang Monastery / Tiger's Nest
After an early breakfast, drive to the Tiger's Nest trailhead.
Hike: approximately 4–6 km round trip, depending on the route and stopping points.
The hike passes through:
- Pine forest
- Prayer flags
- Mountain viewpoints
- Taktsang Cafeteria
- Tiger's Nest viewpoint
- Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest)
The monastery is dramatically built into the cliffside and is one of Bhutan's most iconic sights.
After returning from the hike:
Paro sightseeing:
- Kyichu Lhakhang – one of Bhutan's oldest and most sacred temples.
- Drukgyel Dzong – historic fortress with views towards Mount Jomolhari, weather permitting.
- National Museum of Bhutan (Ta Dzong) – subject to opening hours.
- Rinpung Dzong
- Traditional wooden Nyamai Zang Bridge.
Optional experiences:
- Archery.
- Traditional Bhutanese cooking.
- Hot-stone bath.
- Local café and handicraft exploration.
Overnight: Paro.
Day 7: Paro → Haa Valley
Approx. 65 km | 2–3 hrs
Route: Paro → Chele La Pass → Haa Valley
After breakfast, drive towards Haa Valley, one of Bhutan's quieter and less-visited Himalayan valleys.
The road climbs towards:

Route: Haa Valley → Chuzom → Phuentsholing → Jaigaon → Dooars → Bagdogra / NJP
En-route:
- Scenic drive through Haa Valley.
- Mountain roads towards Chuzom.
- Continue through the Bhutan–India border at Phuentsholing / Jaigaon.
- Drive through the Dooars.
- Tea gardens and forest landscapes along the way.
- Depending on the route and available time, brief photo stops may be made along the Dooars.
Continue to:
- Bagdogra Airport, or
- NJP Railway Station
for your onward journey.
